Anime Review: Lovely Complex
Saturday, September 12, 2020 • Anime Review
Lovely Complex came across my radar in 2006 when I was in Japan. The live action movie was set to be released and they were promoting it everywhere. I was in Kiddyland where they had an entire section of Lovely Complex merch. I had no idea what it was about but the trailer looked cute and I wanted the plush bunny they were selling.
Okay fast forward to 202 and I still have yet to see both the live action movie and anime until earlier this week. Crunchyroll ads started popping up on my Facebook and they were advertising older anime romance series like Marmalade Boy, Hana Yori Dango, and Lovely Complex. So in about 2 - maybe 2.5 days and I finished all 24 episodes.
I love the anime so much! It was originally released in 2007 with the manga being released in 2001. I really wasn't expecting to love it as much as I did. The anime made me have emotions all over the place - I laughed, I cried, I screamed but it wasn't as bad. They did have situations arise between the main characters - Risa & Otani - that I felt were so unnecessary but because it's a high school romance, it just had to be included but the one thing I will say, I wasn't frustrated about it.
There are some series where both main characters do everything wrong and you just want to slap some sense but Lovely Complex thankfully didn't go overboard with it. They kept the situations between both of them. They focused on their feelings about liking each other or in Otani's case, not knowing how to turn off the friend part and seeing her as something more. Which I get, that shit hurts when said out-loud.
Some things I really love about the anime that no matter what was going on between Risa and Otani, they made sure to keep their friendship going or tried in some episodes. Risa did do a bit of crying but it wasn't as bad as other series I've watched.
The series got into it fast with Risa realizing she like him but Otani had to catch up but they both worked hard to try and not make it awkward. The anime didn't jump into both of them having a relationship and I loved getting to see that progression.
Risa and Nobuko's friendship was another great part of the anime. She was 100% down for her best friend to be with Otani and helped in any way she could. Her character was hilarious and I loved her from the start. She's the friend you need in life - the one that tells you to keep going but can also tell you when to take it down a notch or 20.
Also I couldn't get enough of Nobuko and Nakao relationship. They were so cute together in the entire series and he was also supportive of Risa and Otani. All the side characters were great and I loved every single one of them. I just wished they didn't cut out Chiharu and Suzuki for a good portion.
I know I mentioned the series ran for 24 episodes but really, I think they could of cut it a bit short. The last four episodes were so out of place. I know they were thrown in to make the main characters realize that they really do care for each other because at one point Otani was spending a lot of time going to cram school so Risa got a job but her co worker was a fucking creep in that episode. And where the hell did Otani's neighbor come from? Was that really needed? The only good thing to come out of that was Risa figuring out what she wants to do after she graduates.
But overall, I really loved the anime. I give it a 9/10 just because I hated those last four episodes.
